Blackburn Sanctuary Landscapes

Last term the Grade 5 and 6 students were working in grayscale and black and white so this term's art focus needed to have some colour in it! The Grade 5 and 6 students were given the challenge of mixing up as many different colours as they could, using a basic colour pallet of only red, blue, yellow (the primary colours) and black and white. The colours that the students had to mix up had to match up to colours seen in photographers of Blackburn Lake Sanctuary.

The Great Wave

The Year 5 & 6 students created these Great Wave paintings. This is one of my favourite units for the senior students! They looked at Japanese artist, Katsushika Hokusai’s ‘The Great Wave off Kanagawa’ woodblock print. They identified and analysed the dominant art elements and principles present in Hokusai’s famous artwork, and discussed how they were effective. The students produced two Great Wave paintings of their own. For the first artwork, the students were required to keep one element the same from Hokusai’s Great Wave artwork, and then add in an entirely new element or concept. For the second painting the students used the subject matter and compositing of Hokusai’s Great Wave artwork. They then used iPads to research various art styles and movements, applying them to their own artwork. Some popular choices were Pop Art and Impressionism.

Pro Hart Dragonfly Paintings - Years 1 & 2

To finish our Term 3 unit on Pro Hart & Performance Art, the Year 1 and 2 artists were given the opportunity to paint a Pro Hart inspired dragonfly; focusing on one main art element or principle, such as - line, colour, pattern. The scene/ background for their dragonfly was completely up them- it could be realistic, abstract, dreamlike. And no artwork is complete without the artist signing their 'Pro' name on their masterpiece! Did you know?..... Pro Hart's real name was actually Kevin Charles Hart. Pre-Preps visit the Art Room!

The prep-preps had a special visit to the art room last week. They had a tour, learnt how to put their art smocks on and sit safely on the big art room chairs. The little artists went on a jungle adventure and had some fun using jungle paint brushes and even painted their own line artwork.
