Giant Colour Swatches

Image
While the Year 6 students have been busy working on their Year 6 end of year Art Project over the past few weeks, the Year 5 students have been working on an exciting project of their own.... Giant Colour Swatches! In groups of 2 or 3 students, each group decided on what colour scheme they would work with. The students showed great collaboration when working in groups and mixing up the colours together.  Through this project, the students learnt about the Art elements of Value, Tone and Colour. When we came up with names for each of the newly created colours, we discussed symbolism in Art. The students came up with fantastic different colour tones and shades aswell as some very creative and impressive names!

Graphite Self Portraits

Image
The students in Year 5 and 6 created these stunning graphite portraits. To create their pieces the students first covered their page with powdered graphite and used a photograph of themselves to draw from. Then using kneedable erasers, the students looked at the highlights and lowlights on their face and pulled off the graphite to reveal the lightest points on the image. Then, the students began drawing in the detail, by working on their image with both the photograph and artwrok turned upside down. This allowed the students to work on drawing what they could see, rather than what they thought they knew. The final pieces are a credit to the focus and persistence that the students showed during the process.

Blackburn Sanctuary Landscapes

Image
Last term the Grade 5 and 6 students were working in grayscale and black and white so this term's art focus needed to have some colour in it! The Grade 5 and 6 students were given the challenge of mixing up as many different colours as they could, using a basic colour pallet of only red, blue, yellow (the primary colours) and black and white. The colours that the students had to mix up had to match up to colours seen in photographers of Blackburn Lake Sanctuary.  A Fredrick McCubbin painting, painted in 1898 near Blackburn. Pop Art Portraits

Image
Over the past few Art lessons the Grade 3 and 4 students have been studying Roy Lichtenstein's artworks.  The first step of this project was to pose for a photo, next we traced the basic lines of our faces, then painted them in bold, bright colours. The final step was to add the special 'ben day' pop art dots.

Starry Nights

Image
To create these captivating mixed media artworks, the students first examined the elements of Vincent Van Gogh's famous Starry Night artwork. There were some very mature and interesting group discussions about the meaning behind Van Gogh's Starry Night artwork; some students thought that the swirls in the starry night sky symbolised wind, others thought it symbolised rain, and some students thought the swirls represented light reflections. In the end we all thought that the most important and dominant elements were the houses, the tree, the moon, stars and swirls in the sky.  The year 1 and 2 students learnt about the art element of tone, when they painted the blue backgrounds. The next step of the artwork was to create the paper collage pieces including; a moon, a tree and as many houses as they wished. Some students got very creative and carefully stuck on little windows and doors. The final steps to complete these masterpieces was using the oil pastels to create the swirls...

Fictitious Fish Creations

Image
The Grade 1 and 2 students have been using their wild imaginations and creative art skills to come up with some crazy designs for their own Fictious Fish! The artisits were given the challenege to create their own Fictitious Fish, using a recycled plastic bottle. Firstly we explored what the definition of Fictitious... 'not real or true, invented, imaginary.' Then we looked at different kinds of fish for inspiration. We sketched the features that we liked about each fish. The students have been exploring what everyday household items we can recycle and reuse to create new art. We have also been talking about the importance of a design brief and plan. So far the artists have been demonstraing some fantastic communication and collaboration skills when selecting and sourcing the materials. Stay tuned for more exciting updates on our Fictitious Fish creations! Working on our Design Briefs Experimenting with materials... Some colourful fish in development...  Referr...

Warhol Watercolour Paintings

Image
The Grade 1 and 2 students looked at Andy Warhol's '25 Marilyns' Pop Art piece for inspiration for their latest artwork. We explored the art elements of colour, pattern and repetition. The students loved working with the watercolour paints - some students came up with some amazing contrasting colour combiniations. There were lots of skills involved in creating this artwork, including cartoon drawing, cutting, glueing, positioning and balancing out our artworks. Andy Warhol's '25 Marilyns'
